Scenic drives
Driving through the Adirondacks is truly a breathtaking experience, especially in the Whiteface Region. Here, our roads hug mountains, rivers, and valleys, making the journey part of your adventure!
Go paddling
For every mountain in the Whiteface Region, you can be sure there’ll be a waterway just steps from it. From mellow river floats and wide open lake paddles to technical whitewater kayaking, you’ll be catching fall views via SUP, kayak, or canoe this season.
Hike scenic trails
Hiking is the perfect way to get up close to the transitional season here. Trails flood with color, with nature walks that boast solitude and calm terrain to rocky summits with expansive foliage views. In the Whiteface Region, find a trail for every level, with gentle beginner climbs and High Peaks just steps away.
Take a gondola ride
For unique views you can’t find any other way, slow down with the Cloudsplitter Gondola. Take your seat on the eight-passenger gondola, carrying you from the Main Base Lodge to the summit of Little Whiteface Mountain. While you slowly make your way to the top, look out the windows to take in the views of streams, ski trails, steep rock faces, and thick, colorful forests below.

Festival of Colors
This hometown festival is a can’t-miss fall staple. The Festival of Colors features a variety of vendors, including food trucks, drink vendors, live music, artisans, and a DJ. There are activities for the whole family, including face painting, pumpkin painting, and more. Don’t forget your flannel!
Oktoberfest at Whiteface Mountain
Named to the list of 13 Best Festivals in Ski Country, as featured in Ski Magazine, you’re in for a day of classic autumn celebrations when you join our annual Oktoberfest at Whiteface Mountain. Enjoy a tall mug of German beer while the oompah band plays, feast on Bavarian-style cuisine, and fit in some dancing, all with Whiteface Mountain as your backdrop! While the celebration roars, fun for the whole family can be found with craft vendors, pumpkin painting, jugglers, bounce houses, scenic gondola rides, and more.
WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series
Whiteface Mountain is getting ready to host the WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series for another year! In 2026, the world’s top male and female mountain bikers will compete in the final Downhill and Cross-country World Cup races of the World Series, crowning the year's overall champions. Witness the Downhill races at Whiteface Mountain and Cross-country at Mt Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid.

High Falls Gorge
High Falls Gorge stuns as the Adirondacks’ most iconic 30-minute walk. Four majestic waterfalls cascade over rocks into a deep crevice carved a billion years ago, now surrounded by fiery foliage that frames the falls in a picture-perfect scene. Wheelchair accessible trails complete this attraction, making it so everyone can enjoy the falls.
Jay Covered Bridge
As the sole remaining bridge of its kind in the Adirondacks, the Jay Covered Bridge is a must-stop attraction. Constructed in 1857 and completely restored in 2007, this wooden Howe truss covered bridge spans 175 feet over the East Branch Ausable River in Jay. In fall the bridge makes for a stunning photo-op, surrounded by foliage and the rushing river beneath it.
Local farms

Plan to visit between mid-September and early October
The best time to visit the Whiteface Region is the middle of September and into the first week of October. Not only is this usually when our leaves peak, it’s also the time when most major events are happening across the region!
Pack for chilly temperatures
The Adirondacks in fall can have a wide range of weather patterns, sometimes multiple in one day. Fall here is characterized by lower temperatures, and you might catch glimpses of snow on our mountain tops. If you’re preparing for a hike, always be sure to pack extra layers and a warm coat even if it’s warm and sunny at the trailhead. Look for clothing made of synthetic fabric or wool; their breathability will do a much better job at keeping you warm and dry.
Find the best fall views by mountain
Anywhere in the region, you'll find incredible views of foliage. Hiking trails can offer some of the best views from the highest points around. A fan-favorite viewing location is Whiteface Mountain, using the Whiteface Veterans' Memorial Highway, or taking the Cloudsplitter Gondola up to the summit of Little Whiteface.
