Spring conditions advisory for trails

The DEC encourages hikers to postpone high elevation activities due to unstable spring conditions. With an unusual winter, conditions usually encountered in late-March to mid-April are present currently on trails. This includes thinner snowpack on trails, deteriorating and variable depth snow alongside and off-trail, poor quality ice, slippery trails, and high-water crossings. As snow and ice continue to melt at high elevations, steep trails can pose a serious danger to hikers. For more up-to-date information on trail conditions, visit the DEC website.

Burn ban

The annual burn ban is in effect from March 16 through May 14 in New York state. Since 2009, the DEC has enforced the annual brush burning ban to help prevent damage during heightened conditions for wildfires. The current regulations allow residential brush fires in towns with fewer than 20,000 residents during most of the year, but prohibit such burning in spring when most wildfires occur.

What is allowed:

  • Backyard fire pits

  • Campfires

  • Small cooking fires
