These trails are a multi-purpose landmark for the New York State DEC. They are open to mountain biking, hiking, trail running, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and pretty much whatever else you can do without the use of a motor vehicle.

Getting there

From the intersection of Route 86 and Route 431 (Whiteface Memorial Highway), follow Route 86 toward Jay. Continue for just under 2.1 miles to Hardy Road on the right. Follow here for around 2.2 miles to the Wilmington Wild Forest, Beaver Brook Tract Trail System on your left.

The trails at Beaver Brook are of a wide array of difficulties and terrain. One trail in particular is excellent for hiking and that is the Good Luck Trail. This trail ascends to a ridge where excellent views can be enjoyed.

Mountain biking

The Beaver Brook Tract Trail Network, otherwise known as Hardy Road, is 6.6 miles of trails with a difficulty level right for anyone.

A smooth, unbroken singletrack is a great warm up on Coniferous, but the tighter, flowing trails of Make Believe, Upper Twisted, and Twisted Pine are just as nice. Safe Bet is a great twist on an old school trail with rocks and roots. Good Luck and All In gain a lot more elevation (200 and 800 feet, respectively) over slick slab and craggy rock. It's technical, but surely not to be overlooked.

Trail running

Trail running is also another excellent option here and with the wide variety of trails; one can enjoy numerous loops to vary the workout.

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing

Choose from the seven trails now on the Beaver Brook Tract at this time. These trails were developed by the local organization Bark Eater Trails Alliance (BETA) and the NYSDEC with technical support from International Mountain Bicycling Association. A much longer loop is currently being developed on the east side of the trail network, but as of yet it is to be completed. This trail network is always under construction and maintenance and new trails are added each year. Be sure to keep up to date on the progress by visiting the NYSDEC web pages or the BETA website.
