Horse show jumping

Show jumping or 'stadium jumping' is an English riding event. It is a relatively new sport, originating sometime in the mid-18th century. Some shows feature dressage and equitation, however, the Lake Placid Horse Shows feature only hunter and show jumping in both adult and junior divisions. Some of the youngest jumpers are seemingly too small for even a pony. They start competing at a very young age in show jumping circles. It's amazing to watch these tiny little jumpers and see how well they perform in the competition! Your kids will love watching these events, although be forewarned of the desire to own his or her own pony that ensues.

Over 1,000 horses visit the Adirondacks

The Lake Placid and I Love New York Horse Shows bring nearly 1,000 horses to Lake Placid for three weeks at the end of June each year. A veritable city of tents is erected early in June in anticipation of the events. The brightly striped tents house the millions of dollars worth of horses their owners bring to these shows annually. The grounds are abuzz with golf carts and Welsh Corgi dogs. These little dogs seem to be the breed of choice at farms in the show jumping world and they're right at home at the show grounds, many of them roaming around visiting with everyone.

Lake Placid is a favorite on the show jumping circuit. Its intimate atmosphere and clean mountain air are much appreciated by attendees, where they feel as though they are on vacation, unlike many of the other venues in large cities around the country. One will see top international competitors jumping here in Lake Placid. It's likely you'll see some of the same competitors here that end up on Olympic teams in future games. Often, they will even compete here the same year, prior to the Olympics later in the summer.
