Getting close to fall has never felt better
Whether you’re down low or up high, fall in the Whiteface Region is a sight to behold. For a mellow outing, there’s nothing like a visit to the Jay Covered Bridge. Built in 1857, this gorgeous structure spans the banks of the Ausable River, which gently meanders through the valley here. Upstream from the bridge, the Ausable has a much different feel as it rages through the Wilmington Notch. There are few things as beautiful as the waterfalls and whitewater of High Falls Gorge set against a backdrop of vibrant fall colors. You don’t need to be an expert of the outdoors to see this amazing place up close — the railings, bridges, and walkways make access easy for a range of abilities. If you’re into Adirondack wildlife, be sure to swing by the Adirondack Wildlife Rehab and Refuge Center, a place dedicated to the rehabilitation of sick or injured animals, to learn about some of our local critters. And of course, Whiteface Mountain towers over the valley. Take a hike, bike, or drive up the scenic Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway for a sweeping vista from 4,867 feet.
Camping and hiking are two of the best ways to immerse yourself in autumn’s glory. Some hikes, like the one to Cobble Lookout, offer outstanding views with minimal effort, while all-day outings include any of the three long, steep trails to the summit of Whiteface, where 360 degrees of fall await. Don’t feel like walking? Take a more modern approach to mountaineering with a gondola ride to the 3,767-foot summit of Little Whiteface.
In the Whiteface Region, our trails aren’t just for foot traffic. Sure, it’s fun to wander the Flume Trails, but it’s even more fun to mountain bike them. And speaking of mountain biking, did you know we’re home to the best mountain biking trails in the Adirondacks? From beginner-friendly forest paths to steep technical terrain, our ever-expanding trail networks will ease novices into the sport and challenge seasoned riders. Hit up the Flume Trails, Hardy Road or grab a shuttle bus to the Poor Man’s Downhill and get in on this thriving new scene!
