There are so many family-fun things to see and do in the Adirondacks in the winter! Wilmington is the home of Whiteface Mountain, which was rated as one of the best mountains to ski in the East! If skiing isn’t your thing, High Falls Gorge offers one of the coolest places to hike or snowshoe in the winter, with awesome views of ice formations and frozen waterfalls. Santa’s Workshop is great for the kids, and the kid in you - who doesn’t love to see Santa? Chocolate lovers will find their new favorite at The Candy Man Homemade Adirondack Chocolates, and Mad River Pizza is a must after a long day outdoors! A day in the Whiteface Region is always a good day!
There’s nothing more exhilarating than skiing at Whiteface! With a total of 87 trails for all different skill levels, Whiteface Mountain has 288 skiable acres for you to explore. Bring your own equipment, or you can rent right at the mountain. Have a split group of experienced skiers and newbies? Whiteface can handle that! The Kids Kampus helps beginners get going, or you can choose to try a private or group lesson to tighten your skills. Ski/boarder cross riders can show off their skills in the mini park, while experts can take on The Slides. When you need a break, relax in the lodge with a hot cocoa - or something stronger - and then take a gondola ride to the top and experience the beauty of the Adirondacks below you. Make sure to put “Ski Whiteface” on your Adirondacks to-do list!
Even if you stopped here during the warmer parts of the year, nothing is like going to High Falls Gorge in the winter. You can go on self-guided tours and see the four breathtaking waterfalls, which freeze in winter into beautiful ice formations. It’s definitely a must-see, and so is the huge pot hole that was formed from the falling water more than a billion years ago! Snowshoes and crampons are available to rent for your tour through the park. After your time outdoors, there is complimentary hot chocolate to warm you up, and you should definitely plan on lunch in their River View Cafe. Weekend and holiday visitors get an extra treat: roasting marshmallows over a campfire! High Falls Gorge is definitely a great activity to experience with the entire family!
Santa’s Workshop has much fun to offer in the winter for your family - especially in the weeks leading up to Christmas. The Village of Lights is an event for family and friends that will certainly get you into the holiday spirit. The park is lit up and you can enjoy caroling, roasting marshmallows over the fire pits, shopping for unique gifts, feeding the reindeer and, best of all, seeing the one and only Santa! It is held on the first three Sundays of December and the 21st, 22nd and the 23rd. There are fun rides you can go on like the Christmas Carousel, a live nativity pageant, and delicious places to grab homemade fudge or hot cocoa. There is a talking Christmas tree named Tannenbaum and the frosty North Pole that is frozen all year round! Only a Grinch would miss out on Santa’s Workshop this year!
If you are a chocolate lover like me, a great bonus to your visit to the Whiteface Region is stopping at the Candy Man Homemade Adirondack Chocolates & Gifts. Just walking in the door makes your mouth water with the smell of delicious chocolate in the air. With so many choices, you’re sure to find a new favorite each time you visit! Chocolates make great gifts and stocking stuffers – make sure you stop by the next time you’re in town!
Outdoor fun is the reason many people come to the Adirondacks, but there are plenty of other ways to spend a relaxing afternoon or evening after a day out in the clean, crisp Adirondack air. Enjoy dinner at Mad River Pizza in Au Sable Forks, then stroll down Main Street to The Hollywood Theatre. It’s a charming, old-fashioned theater that will bring you back in time as you watch the latest cinema releases. A great choice for movie night, and a great ending to a perfect Adirondack day, adult tickets are $6 and kids’ tickets are just $4.
Plan your next vacation in the Whiteface Region of the Adirondacks. With so many unique and awesome things to do, you’ll be glad you did!
