Summer Events! Free Outdoor Concerts and More.

Of course the Whiteface Region takes on a decidedly outdoor feel during the summer months, just like in the winter months! However, the dominant theme for events this time of year (mid-to-late summer) leans more toward the arts than sports. Our region, like the surrounding areas, is a haven for artists and musicians of all kinds. There isn't a day during summer in the Adirondacks that you can't find some sort of concert or performance on the calendar.

Wilmington beach concerts

Every Thursday, the Wilmington Town Beach on Lake Everest is the scene of Free Summer Concert Series. The recent overhaul and reconstruction of the recreation area at the beach added an awesome pavilion where bands perform each week beginning at 6 pm. Concert goers bring picnics and grills and make a fun party out of it every Thursday evening. The large shaded lawn areas provide a beautiful setting with picnic tables and grills scattered throughout.

The lineup for the remainder of the summer season:

  • July 24:  On Three (Variety)
  • July 31:  Bootleg Band
  • Aug 7:   Split Rock (folk, rock, blues)
  • Aug 14:  In Cahoots (country/rock)
  • Aug 21:  Crosswinds (variety)
  • Aug 28:  Rehab Roadhouse (variety)

Don't miss one of these fun concerts at the beach, and be sure to bring a picnic. See you there!

Town of Jay concert series

The Town of Jay is fortunate to have a beautiful village green on which to stage events. The free Summer Concerts on the Jay Green are a perfect example. The sponsors even serve refreshments during the intermissions each week. Bring the kids, a blanket and picnic and join the fun taking place almost every Friday evening through late August. The music starts at 6:30 pm. Here's the lineup:

  • Aug. 1:  Larry MacDonald Band
  • Aug. 8:  Sven Curth
  • Aug. 15: Celia Evans
  • Aug. 22: Roy Hurd
  • Aug. 29: Drew and Annie Sprague

Learn something new!

One of our most interesting facilities here in the Whiteface Region is the SUNY Albany Atmospheric Sciences Research Field Station (ASRC) on Whiteface Mountain. The facility is a cornerstone of weather research right here in our back yard. ASRC hosts regular science lectures at the headquarters off the Whiteface Mountain Memorial Highway. Two lectures this summer you won't want to miss are:

  • July 22: Big Cats of the Adirondacks
  • August 19: When Did the Adirondacks Become Mountains?

Beginning at 7 pm, these informative and interesting lectures are led by experts in their fields and you'll leave with some fascinating new knowledge! It's an easy drive to the headquarters - at the 4-way stop in Wilmington, head up Whiteface Mountain Memorial Highway, and you'll find the Marble Mountain Road at approximately 2.25 miles from the intersection. Turn left and go to the end of the road to find ASRC's headquarters in the big log cabin.

Rock the Face

Whiteface Mountain Ski Center is pulling all the stops this summer with an outdoor concert series as well. Spend the day trying out some of the mountain's fun new activities and then stay to hear some of our great regional talent perform on the new outdoor stage at the base of the Face Lift. Every Saturday in July and August you'll enjoy a different band, so don't miss the fun! The Cloudspin bar will be offering beverages and there's food available as well.

Don't forget mountain biking!

With all the culture you'll enjoy this summer in the Whiteface Region, don't forget Wilmington is the mountain bike capitol of the region! There are events galore at Whiteface Mountain Bike Park so check it out and visit soon for some thrilling downhill and cross country knobby tire biking experiences.
