Franklin Delano Roosevelt himself was heavily involved in the creation of the Veteran's Memorial Highway, turning the first spade of dirt in September of 1929. Engineers, construction workers, and stone masons labored through four years of the Great Depression to complete a scenic route at a time when automobiles were still new to the public. FDR returned on September 14, 1935 to dedicate the highway in memory of the veterans of World War I.

It's an eight mile climb that ascends to such alpine heights that there is a discernible difference in the trees and vegetation. Lake Stevens, named for 1932 Olympian bobsledder Hubert Stevens, offers a self-guided tree trail with all 34 Adirondack native species represented.

That's the castle at the top of the mountain. It was built from the granite excavated during the highway construction. The upper level has windows for the view, and the lower levels has amenities like a snack and gift shop. There's also a hiking path or elevator to get to the very top, all 4,867 feet of it. The path offers great views and fascinating dwarf flora that only grows in alpine conditions.
